Blame It on the Rain is the second episode of the series Harold and the Purple Crayon that aired on January 5, 2002.
Summary[]
It was Harold's bedtime one stormy night. His mother tucks him into bed as usual, but Harold couldn't sleep and was more mesmerized by the rain falling outside. He got up and looked out, wondering where rain comes from. Harold gets his purple crayon and draws his way on a walk in the rain. He also draws an umbrella as the moon that follows him around was covered by a black cloud.
He walks past many puddles that he jumps and splashes into, and plays around more in even more water puddles in an uplifting song number. After that, however, the puddles morph into a rapid stream, and Harold spots two squirrels in danger as they flow down with the water. He attempts to draw a net to catch them, but he just catches a fish, so he runs quickly and draws a rock wall, but they end up flowing underneath it. The squirrels are about to reach the end of the stream and down into a waterfall. When they fall, Harold quickly catches them with his umbrella, and the squirrels are finally safe.
Harold knew that the squirrels had a mother who was likely looking for her children, so he had to find her and return the squirrels. He knew the squirrels lived in a tree but doesn't know which type they live in. Harold draws some tree designs, but the squirrels don't live in any of them that he sketched. Harold frantically draws more and more trees and inevitably creates an entire large forest, but not a single of the trees appear to be where they lived. With a drawing illusion, Harold creates a ladder that extends high into the sky that he climbs to get a better view, but the ladder is wet and therefore slippery. Nevertheless, the moon starts shining and Harold doesn't give up. When he does reach the top, the moon gets covered up, the wind gets stronger, and Harold and the squirrels fly off the ladder.
With quick thinking, Harold doodles a bird in the air, and as he falls the bird swoops them up, then it takes them on a ride in the sky. Harold eventually hopes that the bird will drop them off somewhere, and it does when it spins around - right on a white cloud. Harold and the squirrels begin having fun on the fluffy cloud, they make snow angels, roll down on a cloudy slope, and the squirrels create a few hairdos on Harold. Suddenly, Harold hears running water and finds the answer to his wondrous question of where the rain comes from. He sees water spewing out of a cloud onto the cloudy ground. Harold gets an idea and draws a sink onto the running water, and gives the squirrels a bath so they look clean when they get to their home. After their bath, he puts on a swim cap and goggles, and the squirrels swim around in the water.
Eventually, the sink starts overflowing. Harold tries getting the squirrels out, but they get cheeky and dive into the water every time Harold attempts to grab them. He draws handles to stop the sink, but that fails as the handles break off. The squirrels, and Harold, begin flowing down the newly developed stream and fall off the cloud and in the air until Harold uses his umbrella to make them float down to the ground safely. Harold still had to get the squirrels to their mother, but he still had trouble finding where they lived. He remembered there was a nest in the tree right outside his bedroom window, so he draws it and sure enough, the squirrels reunite with their mother and thank Harold with kisses. After a while, Harold starts getting tired, so he draws his room and gets into bed. Harold still wasn't sure where the rain came from or why it fell, but he now had a new question: why does the rain stop?
