Fly Away Home is the third episode of the series Harold and the Purple Crayon that aired on January 12, 2002.
Summary[]
Harold was getting in his bed for bedtime. His mother tucks him in and opens the window to let the breezy air in. When she leaves, a ladybug enters the room which distracts Harold from sleep, and flies around. Harold goes to the window and the ladybug crawls onto his finger, but it flies away and goes right back outside. Harold was sure that it was scared, and wonders what it was like to be small. He gets his purple crayon and draws a field.
Harold also draws a packet of seeds that he plants all around the soon-to-be garden, and also sketches up a garden hose to water all the seeds. Eventually, a lot of flowers start to grow, and grow so huge and tall that it makes Harold feel like he is very small after all. As Harold frolics around he stops in front of the lily pond, which looked like an ocean as his size. Harold gets on a lily pad and draws an oar to steer around, until he bumps into a frog that was twice his size. Harold remembered how the ladybug felt, as she thought that Harold looked like the frog up close: big and scary. The frog catches a fly, and as Harold moves away he decides to draw him a gumdrop just in case he was still hungry, and throws it in his mouth.
Harold draws land and wanders, drawing up stairs to a leaf and meeting another ladybug who was sucking up the dewdrops. Because the ladybug was now his size, he greets her with no trouble. The ladybug invites him to help her drink the drops, but Harold remembers that it's not polite to slurp and draws a teapot and teacups, and puts the droplet into the teapot and pours the dew into the two cups. After they drink up the ladybug wants to play hide and seek with Harold. He counts and she hides. Harold realizes how hard it is to find someone is a large garden, but he doodles up a telescope and spots the ladybug trapped on a spider web.
He tries to climb up the place where she is at, but has no luck. Harold draws an alarm which signals a fire engine to come with firemen. The firemen puts Harold on a ladder and reels him up to the spider web, but it is a bit too short to fully reach the ladybug. Nevertheless Harold draws a cane to get hold of the first string, and safely makes it to the ladybug and uses scissors to cut her free. The ladybug is awed by her hero, so she shows him to her home to meet her family, which to Harold's surprise, is extremely huge. There were black spots everywhere, and Harold lost track of his friend. He eventually meets an ant who is looking for food to give to his queen, so Harold crafts an entire kitchen which looked a lot bigger due to their size. The ant finds a jar of sugar, but he can't get it open. Harold draws a faucet which magically makes the sugar come out. They try it out, but realize that it is salt, and it's something that the queen wouldn't enjoy.
The ant finds a bowl of fruits, also containing bananas. Harold sketches a lasso and the two try to get it, but they make an orange roll towards them. Harold and the ant duck under a table and the big orange hits it, causing two cookies to fly off the plate and break on the floor. The ant thinks this will be great food for the queen, so he walks down the counter. Harold can't do that, so he draws strings on a napkin and makes a parachute to safely get down. The ant gets a cookie crumb and Harold picks up a chocolate chip to take to the queen so he can meet her himself. The ant and Harold get in the middle of a very long line of ants hauling crumbs that go to the royal anthill, while a song accompanies it. Finally Harold gets to the queen and gives her the chip, and she is delighted. Harold notices that the queen has no crown, so she draws her one. The queen makes Harold her king, so he also draws a crown on his head, too. The Royal Feast has begun, and the queen starts eating all her little food while getting big and big. This makes Harold think that being small is starting to get old. He draws a hole to get out of the anthill and starts getting tired. Harold draws his bedroom window around the moon in the sky, and, now in his normal size, gets into bed.
