One Crayon Band is the fifth episode of the series Harold and the Purple Crayon that aired on January 26, 2002.
Summary[]
It was time for Harold to go to bed, but right when he was about to drift to sleep, he heard faint music coming out of his window. The music at first touches Harold and makes him tear up, and then makes his feet dance when it gets livelier. Harold hops out of bed to hear it more, and then draws his imaginative world with his crayon. He still hears it, so he calls his dog Lilac over who has a great sense of hearing. She runs off and using binoculars Harold sees her running to a band shell, where the music is coming from.
Harold runs over to it, recognizing it as his parents took him to one before. An orchestra band is playing on the stage. Because he was all the way in the back, he had trouble seeing in front of the people sitting in front of him, so Harold secretly made the lady in front of him's wig to turn into birds and fly off, which leaves her bald. The band begins playing a "sad song" that starts to make Harold tear up once more.
After that, Harold realizes that Lilac has left his sight, and sees that she is in front of the stage mimicking the conductor's every move. When Harold runs up to her she runs off and runs onto the stage and snatches the conductor's baton. She runs around on stage and Harold chases her, eventually he bumps into her and the baton goes flying and lands right in the conductor's hand again. After the song they play, the concert ends and everybody leaves, much to the disappointment of Harold. He decides to make music himself, and attempts to play the instruments but they don't play correctly for him, even the violin doesn't sound right.
Suddenly, Harold finds Lilac trapped inside a tuba, and because he couldn't reach her, Harold had to blow in it and after some pressure she comes flying back out. Harold was sad that he couldn't play the instruments, but then got an idea that maybe he'll sound better if he played the instruments all at once. Harold gathers all the instruments and ties them all over himself then all the instruments start playing as he walks around. It still doesn't sound right, as the horrid noise makes Lilac howl and she runs off. Harold wondered if he could make music without using instruments, but first, he had to now track Lilac down. Wandering, he draws her fetch ball and throws it, but she still is lost. He sits on a log and hears her, but isn't sure where. He then realizes that every time he kicks the log, a bark from her is heard. Harold also realises that by hitting the log, he is making music. Harold taps on the log more by using a drawn drumstick and his crayon, and eventually Lilac comes out.
Harold draws a trash can and plenty of more objects to see what they sound like when he drums on them, and also draws Lilac a drumstick, too. After they run around playing with things, the two are thirsty. Harold draws Lilac a bowl of water and draws him a bottle of milk. After he finishes it, the wind blows and the bottle makes a noise. Harold finds another instrument out of the bottle, but it playing the same note gets irritating so he draws holes on it, like a flute. While he plays some birds up on a tree begin singing along, creating a melody. Harold draws more animals, such as a frog for low sounds, a woodpecker for rhythm, a hippo for a drum, and more. Everyone plays together like one big band, and while it didn't sound as good as the music at the concert, Harold was proud of himself. Feeling tired, Harold draws himself back to his bed.
